Hampshire Garden Centre: Your Guide To Essential Gardening Equipment |
||||
|
So, how much gardening equipment do you actually need? If you pop to B & Q or indeed any of the major Hampshire garden centres you will be confronted with rows and rows of power equipment made specifically for the garden, all of which it is apparently impossible to live without. |

You can get by quite happily with just the following basics: A really decent pair of heavy duty gloves are an absolute must, if you don’t believe me then just spend a day digging out some huge brambles or trying to clear out a thorn bush and see how you get on! A quality shovel, spade, rake, and hoe, a decent strong trowel, some brand name secateurs, along with a hose and sprinkler attachment. A really strong pair of sharp shears, a robust wheelbarrow, as high a quality lawn mower as your budget will stretch to, some edging tools, and an extension lead, and that should be it.
Everything else is purely dependent upon the size and state of your garden, for example if you have a small, walled town garden it is highly unlikely that you will find a need for a sit on, petrol engined mower! However, if you own a couple of acres of wonderfully manicured lawns and a well-stocked orchard then a wide range of industrial type equipment could be necessary. In all fairness the best advice is always to seek the help of a professional gardener or pop to a reputable small garden centre.
The bottom line though is this. There is only one true essential when it comes to developing your perfect garden, and it is something that is consistently overlooked more than anything else. That essential requirement is enthusiasm and a real desire to create what you want. It should also be noted that you should have a plan for your garden.
You also need to establish a number of key factors regarding your plot of land. Is the soil acid or alkaline? Is it well drained or is it saturated? Will it require irrigation? Is it heavy clay or light sand? Arm yourself with this knowledge combined with a definitive plan for what you want to achieve from your garden and you won’t go far wrong.
Without the requisite enthusiasm, knowledge and plan your project is destined to failure. So our advice is quite simply not to waste your money on high priced equipment if you aren’t prepared to use it. Good luck and keep enjoying your garden.
