Did you know that according to recent research 67% women with wavy or curly hair straighten or smooth their hair every day! Hair straighteners work by breaking down the hair's hydrogen bonds found in the hair's cortex, which causes the hair to bend and become curly. Once these hydrogen bonds are broken, hair is prevented from holding its original, natural form, unless it then becomes exposed to moisture.
Depending on your hair type, repeated use of hair straighteners, like most other heat styling tools, can cause damage such as split ends, thinning of the hair shaft and even causing hair to become brittle and brake. Then after extensive damage, hair will show signs of dryness and display an unhealthy dull appearance.
There are two types of damage all flat irons create, one is heat damage and the other is mechanical damage. Heat damage is unavoidable since the hotter the iron is, the better it works, some new irons can produce up to 232ºC of heat. This causes spit ends, dry hair and loss of hair in some cases. Mechanical damage is where the coating on the irons wears off. Ceramic plates are a lot smoother and kinder to hair and also last a lot longer; they also prevent un controlled rises in temperature and allow for even heat distribution.
So what can we do? If we want soft, shinny good conditioned straight hair, what’s the best way to go about it? Well you could buy all the latest heat protection sprays, shampoos and conditioners. You can try to minimize the use of the straighteners by only using them every other day. You could buy the latest hair straigheners that use the latest damage prevention technology. These days you can spend over £100 on a hair straightening iron. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are better, but there are some straighteners that claim to use ionic and infra red technology, which claims to seal in moisture and oils and to reduce static and frizz and damage. Or we could buy a wig!
There are other options; one is the YUKO system which is straightens naturally curly or artificially curled hair without damaging it. It not only straightens curly and wavy hair but also turns damaged hair back into a healthy condition. The Yuko System uses a mild ammonium thioglycolate solution that is used to chemically break down the protein bonds in the hair.
Boots are now offering a hair straighening system which is based on the Japanese hair straightening system. For only 14.99 you can have permanent yuko straight hair as long as you follow the instructions.
Whether you chose to buy the top of the range straighteners or get a professional Yuko expert to straighten your hair, one thing is for sure, you will end up with straight hair. The condition of your hair will depend on how you go about achieving this straight sleek look. Us women will do anything to get the straight glossy hair we see in all the magazines, even if it does mean drying and almost ruining our hair. But there are options and always remember to read reviews or testimonials before you buy a product. Oh and just for good measure, remember beauty is only skin deep. If you don’t feel good on the inside, no miracle hair treatment or surgery will make you look good on the outside.
