Hair Loss Glossary - Know All about Hair Loss

Norwood scale: Previously known as the Hamilton scale, named after its inventor Dr. James Hamilton, it is a measurement system to access the severity of hair loss. It came to be known as the Norwood Scale after some modification was done upon the original one by Dr. O’Tar Norwood in the 70s.

Papilla: A small rounded protuberance in the root of hair which receives necessary Amino acids for the growth of hair shaft.

Polysorbate 80: Polysorbate 80, also known as Darbepoetin Alfa is similar to the natural protein human erythropoietin. Marketed under the brand name of Aranesp, this drug is supposed to have hair growth promoting agents.

Postauricular Flap: A hair transplantation technique, in which the area behind the ear is used as a donor section. The hair strip is then grafted in the frontal part of the scalp to form a hairline.

Posterior Scalp: The rear part of the scalp.

Preauricular Flap: A hair transplantation technique, in which the temple area is used as a donor section. The hair strip is then grafted in the upper forehead part of the scalp to form a hairline.

Propecia: A 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, this drug is the brand name of Finasteride. It is used to stop hair loss, particularly Male Pattern Baldness.

Punch Graft: A graft that contains ten to twenty hairs in a circular growth.

Recipient Site: The area of scalp where hairs from the donor site are grafted.

Rejection: Generally happens in a failed hair transplant, it is a symptom where tissues are not accepted by the Recipient Site, resulting in dead tissues. Hair cannot be transplanted from one person to another. Rejection is not a problem when the donor graft come from the person himself.

Rotational Flap: A hair transplantation technique, in which a triangular area is used as a donor section, which is then pivoted in a circler rotation into the recipient site.

Saw Palmatto: Traditionally used for men to promote urinary health, it is a natural herb that is falsely thought to prevent loss of hair.

Scalp Reduction: Scalp reduction surgery removes a section of bald scalp and the area is closed by bringing the hair-bearing scalp closer.

Scleroderma: Derived from the Greek words skleros which means hard or indurated it describes a systemic disease marked by skin induration and thickening accompanied along with chronic inflammatory infiltration.

Sebaceous Glands: Small microscopic oil-producing gland present in the skin of mammals, which secrete an oily matter (sebum) in the hair follicles to lubricate the skin.
