Francesca Mendenhall Pittschticks didn't allow trivialities such traditional gender roles get in the way of her progress, so when she learned in 1947, that women weren't allowed in the county fair powder puff race, she entered the contest as Francis, with an "i," and the judges assumed she was a man.
“There’s nothing that happens in a woman’s life that rivals holding her own newborn in her arms,” she said carefully. “My wedding was a most tiresome day, everything that could go wrong did. As for Sarah, my dear granddaughter, she’ll be the best friend I ever have.
“But racing … it was the only thing I’ve ever done in my life for which I had zero expectations of myself. No woman I knew had ever done such a thing.
Francesca was one special grandmother. Her love of dirt course auto racing makes memories of her even better.
Today women continue to take great strides in breaking barriers. The auto racing world hasn't yet embraced females fully in the sport but there are some women, like Danica Patrick, Sarah Fisher and Milka Dunno, or the trailblazers before them, Shirley Muldowney, Janet Guthrie and Lyn St. James, who have made it possible for women car race drivers to keep pursuing their auto racing dreams.
Or any dream for that matter. Women serve in the military, business world and have made names for themselves in sports, movies and politics.
It's people like grandmother Frances that understood the future and opened doors for women. And its becaue of Francesca's spirit, adventurous nature and eccentric lifestyle that the author, Lucinda Sue Crosby decided to write a book about her. The novel has been accepted well among woman, especially the baby boomers.
Women who like car racing or remember the dirt track contests offered for women during the 1920s and 1930s will also enjoy reading about Francesca. After all, she said it best, "I did it flying off the seat of my pants ... and it was marvelous!!!"
