Give it a Rest!

When was the last time you gave yourself an attitude check? Often I hear 'it is not what you do but the attitude in which you do it' that determines your happiness. What is the negative talk in your head when faced with different circumstances? Is it time for you to give it a rest?

Picture when your body is all wound up past chocolate overload. Grab the feeling when you have turned into the Tasmanian Devil because of bottomless coffee or overdoing the Dew. You know the feeling…you’re all revved up. You start talking fast and moving fast and can’t seem to calm down. Your body screams, “Give me a rest!”

Now picture when this happens in your mind.

Case in point. As I came out of the YMCA during a big snowstorm the other day, I found that some jerk had rolled an 80 pound cement “No Parking” sign right in front of my driver’s side door. I couldn’t get in my car! Immediately, my mind started vomiting, “I can’t believe someone on the idiot staff would do this! How was I to know I couldn’t park here with all this snow? Did they ever hear of a note? Don’t they know I have a broken finger and can barely move this blasted sign and just cut my other finger open and now I have to”….blah, blah blah...you know the story!

I know you do this, too. Our brains gets all revved up and go on and on and on about some insignificant toxic story. Drowning in this toxic soup, I later that afternoon received a phone call. It was my 7-year old niece Emily. We talked about nothing for awhile. Then, she had my full attention by asking, “So Janie, ahhh, how was getting into your car at the Y?”

Puzzled, I asked, “Tell me how you know about that.”

Then she started laughing and said, “Mommy and I put it there when we saw your car!”

I had to laugh. It was funny. But then, I just shook my head at how worked up I had gotten. I thought of all the negative tapes that I had allowed looping around in my head. What a waste of valuable energy.

What do you waste your time thinking about?

What affect is it having on your life?

How often does it turn out to not even be a big deal?

Let’s give it a rest!

I just finished a book called “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Dr. Victor Frankl. In this classic, leading psychiatrist Dr. Frankl makes observations from his experience as a prisoner in the horrible Nazi concentration camps. Catch what he says:
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing-to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstance”

Let’s go on attitude check today. Take time to think about what you think about!

It is your choice. If you find yourself all raced up in mental vomit…STOP! Analyze how that is making you feel and how productive it is. Choose to give your mind a rest or redirect it to more uplifting thoughts.

Reaction or choice…it is your call.

“Give it a Rest” Action Step:

When you see a stop sign today…STOP! Ask yourself, “What am I thinking?”

Bonus: Check how you are sitting or standing and get into perfect posture.
Your body and mind will thank you!
