When purchasing a gift you want the gift to be remembered and stick out from typical gifts that the others will be giving. When you think about it, “inside the box” is the most normal everyday (ho-hum) gifts people typically give, such as jewelry, liquor/ wine, plant/flowers…etc. To overcome this, then you must “think outside the box” and come up with creative and unique gift ideas that stand out above others like some of the unique chess sets that are out there today, or possibly start a collection that you will build on for years, like bird houses, angels, glass figurines, unique candles or other non-typical items that can be great presents. The best way to start thinking out of the box is to identify all the things that make up thinking inside the box.
One major perfume brand was beginning to stumble with sales and they couldn't seem to boost them with promotions, lowering prices or getting better shelf placement, but these were "in the box" ideas their executives were coming up with. Then someone dared the normal ideas and said "Let’s just raise the price!"
The price was raised as an experiment and sales soon doubled. As it turns out, certain types of fragrances of perfume are bought quite often as gifts. Buyers don't want to buy the most expensive presents but they also don't want to seem cheap, so they won't buy products that don't cost enough. Now imagine what happens to profit margins when the price is raised and doubled the sales. That's the power of thinking outside of the box.
Defying the norm is a powerful creative technique. The difficult part is to identify the norm, then oppose it, which could lead to creative possibilities.
Another way to get to original ideas is to "imagine the ridiculous, strange and even bizarre." This can be fun, depending on how open-minded you are but once thinking on these lines, you’ll find ways to make sense out of what you come up with by asking yourself "what if…"
New ideas for gifts can come from being outdoors, talking with other people (perhaps people you don’t normally talk too much or never talked to before, listening to everything and everyone, look through magazines (that perhaps you wouldn’t normally purchase). Get outside the box; you can come up with a really unique gift!
