Obviously everyone knows that exercise is good for you. Any aerobic activity in which you get your heart rate up for over 20 minutes is going to strengthen your heart, lungs, and circulatory system. It also helps burn calories and control weight. Aerobic activity prevents many diseases like, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and more. Bottom line, it is good for you. Humans were not meant to live a sedentary lifestyle.
In any smoking cessation program it is important to get regular exercise and here is why. When you get physical activity you get an endorphin rush. This wonderful, natural morphine is created by the pituitary gland and released into the body during physical stress, excitement, or pain. Typically it takes 15-20 minutes of strenuous physical activity to get the endorphin rush, but it can last for a long time after working out.
The endorphins known as endogenous opioid peptides because pharmacologicaly it is a pain killer like morphine and drugs in the opioid family. When you are in pain, such as during strenuous activities, the endorphins prevent your nervous system from sending pain signals to the brain. Similarly endorphins help your body deal with the extra stress you feel from nicotine withdrawal.
Other, also significant, benefits to adding exercise to your smoking cessation program are: The daily distraction from wanting to smoke, doing something that will make you feel good about yourself, increasing lung recovery, and weight loss.
It truly does not matter how you get your heart rate up. Most physicians recommend walking for 30 minutes a day. That is instead of just 20 because it usually takes a few minutes to get the heart rate up. If you have a gym near by spinning class is wonderful for everyone. Swimming is great if you have joint problems. Yoga class is beneficial in so many ways. Or maybe a kickboxing class, to help get out some of the withdrawal frustration. And if you are not able work out at a gym or walk for one reason or another, find some way to stay moving for an extended period. Do anything you can to get your endorphin fix.
