Genioplasty: What To Expect And Things To Remember

Genioplasty is another name for the procedure used to alter the structure of the chin. Here are certain things that you need to know about the procedure before going for it.

A chin is one of the most important balancing features of one's face. The proper size and shaped chin makes all the difference in terms of overall scale and composition of the entire face. If it is an improper size, it throws the whole balance out of whack.

If a chin is too small it can make a person's nose appear bigger than it is or a neck look too wide. It can even evoke an unfair judgment of weakness of character, unfairly associated with the "weak chin". One of the most common ways that it can be altered is through augmentation with the use of an implant. The implant is made of a solid silicone rubber and is placed upon the recipient's jawbone.

This type of device is termed "silastic". It is stable and firm and feels quite natural as it blends with the bone behind it. Some people question whether this is safe, as they've heard some horror stories about the substance of silicone. But make no mistake, this is not silicone gel that caused the uproar in the past regarding breast implants. This is a solid, unmoving device that has a history of being exceedingly safe. Even the silicone gel that received much bad press was never actually been linked to any disease.

If a person is pondering whether or not to have genioplasty, the first thing that they should do is make an appointment with a reputable plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon will carefully screen them to see whether they will be a good candidate for the procedure.

A person will most likely need to have a physical exam as well as lab tests to determine the status of their health. They will look over before and after photos and have a discussion with their physician about options and their expectations of the desired "after" appearance.

The correct size implant will be carefully selected to meet their individual needs. There are cases where a nose shaping is done at the same time as the genioplasty but often the chin's alteration is the sole procedure.

This surgery is considered an outpatient surgery. This means that the patient will go home the same day without a costly hospital overnight stay. Anesthesia used may be either a general anesthetic or a local with sedation. The incision is made either through the interior of the mouth or externally, through the jowl.

There will be some scarring, but it is fairly unnoticeable, especially fading and lightening over time. A firm tape will be applied to the area in order to hold the healing chin in place. There will be some bruising and numbness which should decrease and finally disappear over a period of a couple of weeks. Occasionally the numbness lasts a bit longer.

For the first two or three weeks following the genioplasty, the patient should follow a soft diet and minimize strenuous sports and activities, such as heavy lifting. But after this healing period, they may return to a normal lifestyle and enjoy their newly sculpted jaw line. It's easy to smile with a strong and attractively balanced face and profile.
