If your chin recedes or is misaligned, you may want to consider undergoing a simple surgical or non-surgical procedure to correct the issue. There are several options available, each with its own unique advantages.

A consultation with an experienced cosmetic surgeon will help you to determine which the best approach for your particular circumstances is.

Non-Surgical Enhancement
This non-invasive option uses a filler injection to shape and fill out the chin as desired. The injections take between ten and twenty minutes to administer and patients are able to return home the same day.

You'll likely experience some bruising, tenderness and the injection area may feel swollen for several days after receiving the treatment. However, there is no scarring associated, and very little risk of infection - just be sure to visit a doctor you can trust and know to have high standards of hygiene.

Some doctors who perform injections for enhancement purposes claim that they have more control over the shaping of the chin and the overall outcome of the treatment. Some injections need to be repeated after one year, and there are also permanent versions available.

Genioplasty: Surgical Enhancement
Genioplasty involves a surgeon making a small incision either the inside of the mouth or on the outside of the underside of the chin. An implant may be inserted to provide the desired results, or a small piece of bone may be removed, re-positioned, and held in place with tiny metal hardware.

Your doctor will be able to discuss the pros and cons of both options and determine which the best route for you to take is.

This option is permanent, and the procedure usually takes up to two hours to complete. You can also have other treatments done at the same time, such as rhinoplasty or facial lift surgery.

After surgery you should be able to return home the same day. Bruising, soreness and tenderness are all common and can last a few days or a few weeks, depending on the individual.

Some people experience a tingling or numb sensation in the lip or jaw area that goes away over time. You'll need to stick to a diet of liquids and soft foods until the incision site heals to prevent infection.

Regardless of which type of procedure you opt for, it's always important to ensure you choose a doctor with whom you feel comfortable and who you know has a good reputation for the type of procedure you are considering.

Cosmetic surgery and treatments represent an investment, and not just financially - you are putting your health and appearance in the hands of someone else. Ensure that you go into your appointment well-informed, ask lots of questions, and choose a doctor who is reliable, approachable, and responsible.
