Do you waste time getting in and out of your vehicle to open your garage? Do you hate having to exit your vehicle in inclement weather just to wrestle with opening the door? Maybe your driveway can block traffic or can cause other hassles. If any of this sounds familiar, you might want to look in to installing a garage opener. While the task can seem daunting, it is actually pretty straightforward.
The first thing to do is to make sure that it is actually working properly. If you cannot open and close it by hand without problems, then you need to call the manufacturer or a store that offers repairs to get it fixed. The way this works is by a system of pulleys and chains and if it is not working, an opener could further damage the property. After making sure it works, make sure it is well-lubricated as this will make it open and close with less difficulty. You will also want to make sure that you do not touch any springs or other mechanisms as this could damage the door as well.
After these steps are taken, make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing, which means nothing baggy and no jewelry that you don't want to get dirty. If you have anything on it, you will want to remove them to make sure that nothing gets tangled with the opener. It’s time to install the power unit. This should be placed high enough that no one will walk into it, usually about seven feet from the ground. This unit should have a disconnect cord that needs to be reachable, which is usually about six feet from the ground. There will also be a push button control, and this should be easily reachable and in view of the door, but not where children can easily access it.
Next comes the opener. You will want to follow the included instructions for how to put this piece together. Once it is together, you will mount it to the center of your door and then open it to its full height. Then you will attach the remaining pieces as per the instructions. You will want to be sure that everything has enough space to move freely and that nothing will get tangled in anything else. Most units come with an electric eye that will prevent it from shutting on anything in its path. Make sure that this is installed at the proper height so that no one will get hurt if it is ever closing.
After all of these steps have been completed, it should be ready for use. Test it a few times to make sure that everything is moving correctly and then, you should be all set. If you have any questions, you can always contact the manufacturer.
