In recent years there have been more safety features added to the mechanical type, so that any safety concerns have been effectively addressed.

Whether people have standard garage doors or automatic doors, it's up to them to maintain them. Even if you just have a standard type, it has mechanical parts that need to be kept up in order for it to keep working properly.

If it's a standard door, then you simply need to keep the metal parts lubricated so that they don't degrade, and there may be times when you have to replace some parts. For the automatic type, it should involve having all parts inspected on a yearly or bi-yearly basis to make sure that everything is working safely and efficiently.

Though you may not put as much thought into garage doors as you do other areas of your home, it's still a good idea to make the right choice. Choose correctly the first time, and you don't have to worry about that part of your home again for a long time.
