Garage doors openers make our daily lives just a bit easier. The various mechanisms to hoist that heavy door are sometimes taken for granted, but shouldn't be. It is a sturdy piece of engineering that does a heavy job for us multiple times every day. There are three different sorts of openers, and depending on your budget, needs and space allotment, one should fit your needs quite nicely. The three types are called the Reinforced Rubber Belt, the Screw Drive System and the Chain Loop System.

The Reinforced Rubber Belt type is the priciest selection of the three. Its luxurious operation makes it the quietest one. It uses a reinforced rubber belt to move a trolley which hoists it up and down.

The Screw Drive System is the slowest of the three types. It derives its name from its operative method which uses a long screw attached to a rail in order to move the trolley. It is noisier than the reinforced rubber belt system, but it is the strongest method. If you have a heavy one panel garage door, the screw drive system would most likely be the door you'd select.

The Chain Loop type is the most budget conscious opener. It is a bit loud for some people's taste, but it does the trick. It uses a chain, thus the name, which is attached to a rail which does the hoisting work.

Remote control handheld devices have simplified this opening task even further. A flick of the button on the remote and the opener does its job. These openers continue to be refined and now have options such as courtesy lights and a mechanism that releases it in order to open or close it manually. Another safety feature is a sensor that will cause it to go back up if it hits something unexpectedly in its path.

Maintenance needs to be performed on all of the working parts of a garage door in order to keep it functioning properly. All parts should be inspected on a regular basis in order to check for loose screws, misalignment or parts that need a bit of lubrication. The courtesy lights will need to have their light bulbs replaced on occasion as will the batteries in the remote, which will burn out and need to be replaced.
