Incentives should be temporary, and you shouldn't need to up the ante .After some time the child should know that that particular thing is now expected out of him. Incentives should only be the boosters not the base of the motive to perform the activity.

Kids become more confident by the rewards they bet in return of hard work or moulding themselves differently. To give rewards parents make standards and if the child lives up to these standards he gets a treat on these rewards. But maybe in the process we miss out the fact that good values are to be inculcated from within rather than always dangling carrot in front of them.
