Many leaders make the mistake of misusing power and still others get paranoid over losing it and so they never even think about giving some of it away. In fact they often push their employees away by putting up walls.
These leaders are not only missing out on the chance of developing employees to become competent and motivated, but more than likely they are also missing out on the opportunity for synergy to work.
By giving power away YOU WILL GAIN POWER -- does this make any sense? Think about it.
The more effective your followers are, the more you allow them to do, the more they will do, it is indeed an effective cycle which will ultimately create a strong team. If talking bottom line here, this means a total reflection on your skills and talents as a leader. By giving power away your power increases exponentially. After all you are only as good as your followers.
Here's some tips on how to "let go"
Practice delegating to your followers -- make this a priority in your leadership approach.
Challenge followers by giving them higher skill level tasks - Take inventory of tasks you do, after assessing your followers' talents assign some to those who you feel are competent enough to handle them effectively.
Share information with your followers -- knowledge is power, the more they know, the more they will feel engaged and informed.
Focus on improving communication with your employees, focus on creating a "two way channel" where information flows in both directions.
Whatever your leadership style, most likely this approach will take a little getting used to. Don't reject this approach because you are afraid of losing control because quite the contrary will occur. By following these simple tips in time you'll find that by letting go you will actually gain more than just power, you'll gain the respect, trust, and loyalty of your followers.
