Writing has always been a respected vocation albeit a 'low and slow' paying one unless and until one happens to be a J.K Rowling or a James Patterson! Of course, this is not to undermine the struggle that Rowling or Patterson would have gone through in early years before the fortune cookies started favoring them.

If we discount this 'limited entry' elite class of world renowned writers and authors who are the darlings of the publishing industry and who rake in millions in royalty earnings every year; we are surrounded by talented freelance writers from all parts of the world who are trying every which way to grab a toehold in the industry.
Internet vs. Print Media

Though the odds of success are low in print media and self-publication of work almost impossibility, fortunately for those who make their mark in the industry, success follows a steadily progressive graph. The same however cannot be said of the Internet driven writing and publishing industry where success and failure are as fluid as the medium of internet itself.

The Internet boom has created a sea of opportunities for budding freelance writers and made freelance writing jobs highly accessible. Unlike the print media, freelance writing jobs are easy to find and break into. It is even possible to publish your own article, your own e-book, your own blog on the Internet if you have the patience and the resources to do so.

Social networking sites and personal blogs have made writers of all of us. But the fact that everyone is writing something on the net makes it all that more difficult to establish yourself as a serious, professional writer who deserves to be read. Publishing work is easy but getting people to read your published work is a Herculean task mastered by those who have unraveled the secrets to search engines, keywords and SEO.

Increasing Demand for Online Freelance Writing Jobs

There is an increasing demand for web content on virtually every subject under the sun. Freelance writing jobs also include writing product descriptions, web site reviews, SEO articles, scripts, e-books and so much more. To meet this burgeoning demand people from all parts of the world are getting involved with freelance writing on different scales.

Some are genuinely talented and have an undying love for writing. These are the kind of people who, had it not been for the internet, would be seen bent over their typewriters for a good part of the day or would have been recording their personal memoirs! Some others feel that it is a good way to earn extra money so freelance writing is very popular with home-makers, stay-at-home mothers, students and retirees. To be fair, many from the latter category would also belong to the first category and would establish themselves as skillful writers in due course of time.

Freelance sites offer a platform to match employer needs with the skills of freelancers. These sites offer hundreds of categories of freelance jobs to choose from. Though it is an excellent way for thousands of people working from home to earn money, the misuse of the system often leads to disappointing experiences.
Reasons why Online Freelance Writing Jobs are low paid.

Low rates exist because of the high-volume of content in demand. Rates have further plummeted because of the Asian influence. Countries like India, Pakistan and Philippines are major service -providers of freelance writers. They are willing to work at low rates because the higher purchasing power of the US Dollar works in their favor. Employers primarily from the US and UK are getting tons of work done without a pinch in their pockets. Very few insist on and pay for good quality of work. It is almost as if Freelance writing jobs are being taken up for free!

Some have made it a business to bid for projects at ridiculously low rates which leads to a situation where everyone tries to lower their bid in an attempt to out-bid each other. Employers are paying as low as 50 cents for what they call original articles of 500 words. Writers respond with a rehashed version of content as original work to take home the 50 cents.

Online magazines provide a useful platform for freelance writers. Many of these web sites have been around for years and enjoy a certain patronage from their readers and loyalty from their fleet of writers. These are often unrelenting about the quality of content published and strive to uphold the standards of writing. This along with the freedom to choose your own article topic makes the Web sites hugely popular with freelance writers looking for an outlet for their thoughts and opinion.

However, despite the popularity, writer forums and Web site reviews are resplendent with freelance writers bemoaning the poor revenues and the long gestation period. The problem often lies with the payment format which does not support quick revenue or links the earning not with the quality or originality of the published content rather with the advertisements which get placed and clicked on the article page. Some of the Web sites do pay upfront or purchase your content but that again is not much to write home about!

Imagine a scenario where you publish your article on online magazine site which pays you as per Google AdSense. There are at least 5 steps or rather 5 'Ifs' involved before you get paid those few cents or at best a dollar as shared revenue!

1. If your published article is detected by search engines in related keyword searches. This happens IF you use the right keywords at the right places, have a great title and a tight summary.

2. If your article figures in the top 7-8 searches which appear on the first page of search results of popular search engines as most readers do not go beyond the first page!

3. If your title and summary is attractive enough to lure the reader into viewing your article page.

4. If the subject matter of your article is popular enough to attract advertisements/commercial interest.

5. If the reader gets somehow inclined to click on any of the displayed advertisements.

Finally, the revenue generated through this Google AdSense feature is computed and shared with all parties involved including you, the writer!

It is actually an irony of sorts where struggling Freelance Writers need to produce excellent, appealing content within tight deadlines in order to convince publishers and get noticed by readers. They also need to train themselves in the latest marketing strategies to attract page views and the ever-evasive ad-clicks! However, since the income is just not good enough to sustain a household, many end up pushing their love for writing on the back burner. Others relegate writing to the status of a secondary source of income or pursue it as a hobby in their free time.

More often than not Freelance Writing becomes a creative pursuit at best for those who nurture a deep passion for writing and an unceasing desire to share their views with the world, notwithstanding the fact that such freelance writing jobs are virtually up for free!
