Fog can reduce driver visibility, limit visual contrast and distort a drivers perception and limits the ability to see other cars and objects on the road.
Avoiding a Car Accident
While fog makes for unpleasant conditions, there are however, ways in you can avoid being involved a car accident.
Drive with caution – Leave a greater distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Slow down – Don’t be rushed and take your time.
Fog Lights – If you have them – please use them. Fog lights are designed to reduce glare.
Facts to Consider
Fog can distorts your perception of speed. By the lowered visual contrast, the driver might think that other vehicles are traveling slower than they really are.
Fog can also make it difficult for the driver to judge his or her own speed. Depth perception and surroundings are skewed.
Speeding while driving in the fog is a dangerous combination. Speed limits are designed for driving in ideal conditions. It is the drivers responsibility to match their speed to that of the road conditions.
Fog can make it more difficult distinguishing between stationary objects (such as parked cars, or vehicles stopped at a light) and a moving one (such as moving vehicles and pedestrians).
Heavy fog this past Tuesday morning (Nov 1st 2011) may have been a factor in a four-vehicle car accident at the intersection of Innisfil Beach Rd & Yonge Street just south of Barrie, and north of Toronto. News reports say a pick-up truck entered the intersection and was struck by a vehicle, which caused a two-car chain reaction.
The winter weather often causes condensation to build up on the inside of your windshield and this is a notorious cause for accidents. You should always make sure that you can see clearly through all of your windows. To do this, put your air conditioning on, open a window slightly and wipe any condensation off the windshield with a cloth, but never when driving.
Even the most ignorant of persons simply cannot dispel the importance of car lights in as far as driving is concerned. Without these accessories driving in poor weather conditions would be a nightmare; there would be far too many accidents considering the many that do occur presently thanks to poor visibility on our roads
You should never speed in any conditions, but in icy weather this is even more important. If you are driving over the speed limit and you hit a patch of black ice it will almost always result in a car accident. During bad weather you should automatically reduce your speed to below the limit just to be on the safe side, so that if you do hit ice you will be able to drive through it safely.
Driving in foggy weather is quite dangerous for which you require to take some safety measures. Fog lights are special lights meant for the foggy weather which help in clear visibility. They not only are crucial while driving in bad weather conditions but also prevent accidents caused by visibility problems due to heavy rains, snow, sleet etc. This is a protective shield that provides an extra edge on road safety.
