The flooring of your house consists of two main aspects; the sub floor and your floor covering. The sub floor is a support structure to your house, it forms part of your house foundation and is what your floor covering will be placed on. You can add features into your sub floor before the covering is placed over. If you want under-floor heating, ducts or air conditioning, these are placed within the sub floor of your house. The floor covering is then laid over to provide a safe walking surface.

If you however want or need that little bit extra from your flooring there are special floor structures that you can get to suit your needs such as a floating floor, this type of flooring is mainly used for noise or ventilation reduction, a glass floor, i.e. what you sometimes see used in elevators, nightingale floor, which will make a noise if an intruder enters your home, raised flooring, which enables you to reach utilities underneath easily or maybe sprung flooring, this flooring improves the performance and safety of athletes and dancers.

When it comes to the actual floor covering that you use there are many different styles, materials and textures to choose from. In order to assist you in choosing which covering is best for your needs as well as suiting the layout and style of your room you should gather a collection of small square examples of different floorings available and lay them over your existing floor so you can get an idea of what each one would look like in your home.

Some examples of the main types of floor coverings that are available are:

• Carpet
• Laminate
• Rugs
• Wood
• Ceramic title
• Stone
• Marble

All of the above are merely just a handful of examples of the floor coverings that you have the option of. When you have decided on the actual floor covering the next step to getting the flooring that you want is to decide on the colour and the style that you are looking for.

When searching for the colour and style of your flooring it is important to keep the size of your room in consideration. If your room is rather large then a dark colour, heavy texture or bold pattern will close the room up more. The same can be said if your room is small. If you want to open your room up more you should opt to use light colours without the use of heavy texture or patterns.

Another aspect to keep in mind is the amount of light that your room gets. If your room is facing away from sunlight then you might want to use wooden or a light carpet to ensure that your room receives as much light as it can.

The main factor that you should be thinking about when it comes to the flooring of a room is the use of the room. What is your room used for? Keep this question in your mind as if your room is the main one of the house with constant activity then you should opt for a floor covering that is durable.

When you actually buy your floor covering you should always buy that little bit more than you probably need just in case anything goes wrong when you are in the process of laying your flooring.
