Inspect the fire damage yourself and then put in a call to your insurance company right away and let them know what has taken place. They will send an adjuster to your home that will be able to help you with all of the questions required to fill out a claim report.
You then need to call a fire restoration company. The responsibility of such a company is to restore your home in as professional a manner as possible. In other words, they have the experience and knowledge to do what needs to be done with your furniture, carpets, walls, ceilings, doors and so on.
This is a better way to go than doing the work yourself. Leave the job up to the experts. You already have enough stress to cope with as it is!
Find all of your important papers and documents such as birth certificates, passports, mortgage papers, insurance papers, bills, etc. and put them in the safest place you can think of.
Just make sure you choose a location that you can get to easily. It would be wise to keep your papers in a fireproof safe either in your home or at your workplace before the day comes when you have to deal with smoke and flames in your home.
Make a list of what has been damaged in your house and what has been left intact. The insurance company will need an inventory of items in order to put your claim through in a timely fashion. If you have receipts for any of your belongings then that would be helpful to include with the list.
After fire damage has ravaged a part of your home you need to open windows to get air circulating. The improved ventilation from outdoor air can help to eliminate the odors from the smoke and it can also begin to dry everything out. For your carpets use fans and de-humidifiers. Any area rugs you have or smaller carpets can be placed outside and dried in the air and in the sunshine.
It is particularly important that you address the damage done to your carpets as soon as you can. If carpets are allowed to remain wet for too long then this provides an open invitation for mildew and mold to start growing.
