Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, has long been a common addition to procedures to ease the look of aging in the face. Combined with a facelift as well as a neck or chin lift, eyelid surgery can greatly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the face. |

Asian eyelid surgery has become more common in recent years. Some Asian patients wish to have the structure of their eyelid changed, or simply wish to have wrinkles and fatty tissue removed. Until recently, blepharoplasty did not address the unique requirements of the Asian eyelid structure, making it difficult to receive eyelid surgery that would reduce lines and wrinkles while still maintaining the ethnic look of the eyes.
Double Eyelid Surgery
Procedures to alter the structure of the Asian eyelid date back as far as the late nineteenth century. It is fairly common for the Asian eyelid to have a single crease, which can make the eyelid look heavy or drooping. Adding a crease just above the eyelid can make the eye look wider and more open. However, it takes a skilled cosmetic surgeon to make this alteration to the eye and still maintain its overall Asian look.
Early in the history of this procedure, many chose to have a crease added to give them a more “Western” appearance. Today, while the procedure is usually chosen for aesthetic reasons, patients often wish for surgery that will give them a more open, wider-eyed look but still preserve their ethnicity.
Blepharoplasty to Remove Signs of Aging
Techniques for Asian eyelid surgery have progressed a great deal, particularly in the last few years when more patients wish to maintain their unique ethnic appearance, yet still be able to benefit from the anti-aging effects of blepharoplasty.
For those who wish to remove lines and wrinkles around the eyes or to have fatty tissue removed from the eyelid, it is important to consult with a plastic surgeon who has extensive experience working with the Asian eyelid. A surgeon who understands the unique muscular and tissue structures in the Asian eyelid can provide high-quality blepharoplasty results without compromising the ethnic look of the eyelid.
