At the age of 36, I looked in the mirror and said 'enough is enough' - I knew I needed to change. For me, it wasn't just about losing weight, I wanted to take control of my life. It felt like I had a mountain to climb and no hiking boots.

I sifted through the seemingly endless labyrinth of information - fitness books, fad diets and DVD's trying to find something real - not promised.

As the months went by and the search became the journey, it occurred to me: 'what if I actually find the answer?', I had to actually find time to apply it to my life. The truth is, your own body holds the secret key to weight loss. I discovered that I shouldn't be 'trying to fit it in' but to make it a part of my life, as natural as brushing my teeth. This, for me, was when 'the penny dropped'. Applying this basic principle, I could manage my weight long-term, giving me confidence that I would always look my best. I soon found out that if you want something badly enough, life sometimes has a knack of giving it to you when you least expect!

During that summer, I found out for myself exactly what works and what doesn't. I realized that weight loss can be achieved without following a fad diet. The harsh reality is - there are no short-cuts!

Being able to drop a few jeans sizes was just the beginning. Wonderful side effects which my body exhibited included: the ironing out of my wrinkles, my mood enhanced, I was able to think clearly at work and ideas seem to just appear in my mind just at the right moment.

One of the downsides I found in dieting is those nasty hunger pangs. It is so easy just to reach for those chips or candy bar just because its fast, easy and its right there in front of you. I found that when I succumbed and ate junk food while applying my new knowledge in all the other areas, I felt enormous guilt. I overcame this simply by changing what I put in my food basket at the supermarket and buying more of the healthy stuff, bringing it to work with me. We all have different tolerance levels for these cravings and, in weight loss, your ability to tolerate this psychological discomfort is critical to your success.

I discovered that drinking lots of water will help me lose weight. I discovered that eating proteins and carbohydrates in the right combination, at the right times will help me lose weight. Exercising intensely would also help me achieve my goals. But I needed to take action and apply these principles so that they would work in synergy with each other.

I knew what I wanted and what I didn't want. I needed to burn fat. I didn't want to feel tired and hungry all the time. But most of all, I wanted to fit into my tight black jeans.
