Fall Asleep Fast!

Tips on how to beat insomnia!

With the weekend passed, I’m sure you will agree nothing beats a day packed full of activity. But when it comes to bed-time, nothing’s worse than not being able to fall asleep.
Your mind is faced with the challenge of transitioning from an active and operational mode to a relaxed night-time rest.

Do you find it hard to “switch-off”? Do you lie in bed thinking about the day’s activities or worrying about what tomorrow may bring? Well, here are a few tips that will help you unwind and hopefully enjoy a good night’s rest.

1 – Take it easy
Eliminate any strenuous physical activity less than 3 hours before going to bed, since exercise elevates your body temperature and heart rate. On top of that, don’t eat a large heavy meal just before bed-time. KFC before sleep is a no no!

2 – Avoid confrontations
Remember your mind needs to be at ease before going to sleep. Hence, avoid starting or fueling confrontational discussions. Half an hour before bedtime is not really the ideal time to start planning your next overseas trip or to whinge about an annoying workmate of yours.

3 – Your Room is for Sleep
Sleep or sex only! Nothing else! No reading, no TV watching, no texting or any other activities. You want the act of lying in your bed to be a cue to fall asleep fast, or make love. For all the rest, use the other rooms in your house. A desk is better for your posture anyway!

4 – Bore yourself to sleep
If you have problems sleeping, it’s best not to over-stimulate your mind by reading an engrossing novel or watching hilarious clips on YouTube. Instead, tackle a boring task like doing paperwork or the dishes. Or even read a few pages of a difficult book or skim a work-related document. Better yet, watch the movie The Notebook! (just kidding)

5 – Take a warm bath
Taking a nice warm bath is an excellent way to de-stress, to dissolve tensions and leave the day behind. It has a paradoxical effect: the warm water rises your body temperature at first, but then later on makes it drop faster, easing your way into the night by making you feel sleepy.

Follow these simple tips and you will find falling asleep a breeze. Sweet dreams!
