A typical biometric face recognition system has a big database to store as many face templates as required. The user needs to enroll his facial details into the system foremost. His facial details will be stored in the application as a template. Next time onwards, the individual only needs to look before the camera. The posing face will be matched against all the templates stored in the database. If any of the templates match with the posing face, identity will be verified by the application.
The system makes use of complex algorithm to recognize faces. Permanent features of the face that do not change with time are considered for identification. Distance between the two eyes, distance between the eyes and nose, shape of jaws, and other such features are included. There are hardly any chances of inaccuracies. However, False Reject Rate is a possibility with this application. Majority of the times, the face recognition system fails to identify the individual.
There can be many reasons to this occurrence. The user may not give the exact pose that he gave at the time of enrollment. The head may be slightly tilted or rotated while posing. Researchers are working towards overcoming this defect. They analyze the facial recognition capabilities in bees to succeed in this endeavor. On close observation, it has been found that bees can be trained to recognize faces, even from different viewpoints.
On the basis of the various observations made, experiments conducted, and conclusions drawn, considerable progress has been made in a biometric face recognition system. A modern face recognition system can tolerate any face posture up to ten degrees. The application can identify faces, even if it is nodded up or down, tilted left or right, or rotated towards any direction up to ten degrees. This is similar to the capacity of the bees to recognize faces from different angles.
A bee, though not as intelligent as a human being, has almost one million neurons in its brain. It is an intelligent creature. A face recognition system using artificial intelligence is inspired by the research conducted on these creatures. The mechanism of interpolating or image averaging previously learnt views is used by bees. The same mechanism is being used in the system after the study. Complex identification is made easy through this kind of an artificial intelligence.
It can be said that face recognition system is an intelligent source of security. It makes use of advanced algorithm to identify faces and is more than manual work. In the modern times, technology has been developed to work intelligently. Security industry does not lag behind in the use of intelligent technology either. It has made the world a safer place. The use of biometric face recognition system is expected to increase in the near future.
