Although a traditional facelift is still a popular and effective rejuvenating procedure, new forms of facelifts provide similar results with less recovery time.

A rytidectomy, also more commonly known as a facelift, is a popular cosmetic surgery that helps refresh the face by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and removing loose skin. It can often successfully take ten years off the appearance of a person when performed correctly. Now there are also forms of non-surgical facelifts that can provide similar results with less risks and a shorter recovery period.

The procedure for a traditional face lift involves creating an incision from the ear and up into the hairline, camouflaged as well as possible within scalp and natural lines of the face. The skin is then peeled back away from the deep tissue and muscles.

If necessary, the underlying muscle will be tightened by sutures. The skin is then pulled tightly back into place with the excess being cut away. The incision is closed, commonly with staples, leaving the face and neck with a smoother and younger appearance.

The facelift alone will not address all age-related facial complaints. Face lifts cannot completely remove the nasiolabial folds that develop from the nostril down to the corners of the mouth. It also cannot fully correct drooping eyelids. These issues can be addressed with additional procedures that can be performed simultaneously with a traditional facelift to reduce the recovery period.

The recovery period for a facelift can take between two to three weeks. Normally there is mild discomfort and a feeling of tightness that will dissipate over the first few days. Bruising, tenderness, discoloration, and swelling are common aftereffects. It may take up to a month or two before you're ready for a big occasion or outing.

More recently, new forms of non-surgical facelifts have gained popularity. These procedures often target smaller specific areas, but can provide great results for those with reasonable skin elasticity. Combining skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing can give similar but less extreme versions of a face lift.

These treatments work to diminish fine lines, blemishes, and sun damage by destroying the top layers of skin to reveal the fresh cells that lie underneath. They can give a rejuvenated appearance without the price tag, risks, or commitments that come with a traditional face lift procedure.

Another procedure that mimics some benefits of a traditional rhytidectomy is the liquid face lift. This involves receiving a series of injectables and facial fillers to eliminate wrinkles, fine lines, and to fatten up areas that have hollowed with age. Normally a combination of products is used to create the maximum results. Liposuction is often used as well to eliminate a "double chin" or the loose fat that can accumulate around the neck.

When choosing either a traditional facelift or a combination of procedures to achieve a similar effect, it is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Any surgery has the potential for risks and complications, so it is important to reveal your health history to your surgeon and follow all doctor orders.
