If you are considering this cosmetic procedure, you will benefit from having a younger, more alert appearance when it is over. The best way to ensure you get good results is to follow your doctor’s orders carefully during your recovery. Here is what you can expect for the first few days after your procedure.

The day of your eyelid surgery, have a spot prepared in your home to rest. You should avoid bending over, so have someone around who can help you if you need to pick something up. Feel free to watch television, but you may not have the energy to read or perform other activities with your eyes. Rest as much as possible after the procedure, and use cold compresses on your eyes as often as you can to limit swelling.

You may experience some mild pain, which you can treat with acetaminophen or any pain reliever your doctor prescribed. You do not need to follow any special eating routines, as long as your stomach is not upset from the anesthetic. Your doctor may give you some antibiotic ointment to use. If so, apply as directed. Do not be surprised if your eye turns red and swells slightly, but do call your doctor if you experience any bleeding that does not respond to pressure.

The day after your procedure, you may be surprised by your appearance. Do not fear. This is typically the day when you will have the most swelling and the bruising will begin to show. Most patients look the worst two or three days after the procedure. You can resume your normal routine, as long as you avoid too much bending over, as this can cause pain and increased swelling.

You can read or use the computer as soon as you feel comfortable after eyelid surgery. This will have no impact on your healing process. However, if you have much swelling and any blurred vision, you may find it difficult.

In the first week after your procedure, you may notice that some of the sutures break or untie themselves. This is not a problem, but avoid pulling on them or trying to remove them on your own. Your doctor will tell you when to return to have your sutures removed. On the day of suture removal, avoid using your ointment.

Immediately after eyelid surgery you will be instructed to avoid the use of eye cosmetics and contact lenses. You can put some concealer on the upper cheek to conceal bruising three days after your procedure, and you can use cosmetics on the actual eye ten days after your procedure. If you need to wear contacts, wait about one week. By the end of two weeks, most of your swelling and bruising will be gone, and you will be able to see the results of your eyelid surgery.
