Safe roads are very boring, tells a friend. They can put you to sleep, which in turn could be very dangerous. Now this reminds me of a growing number of extreme commuters in the developed North. People driving down to their work places 200 km away and back home. Reasons are soaring real estate prices forcing people to stay away from the high-priced residential concentrations and also to some extent some even making a choice to stay in the suburbs. Hence, extreme commuting that they must do, often by road.
The standards of road safety in India are thought to be among the best as followed in the developed countries. One of the extreme commuters reported in a local daily in the US had his car speeding at 100 miles an hour, his knees pressed against the steering wheel, helping him with a bowl of milk and cereals and reading his favorite column in the newspaper spread over the steering.
This generation has run out on time needed to accomplish the bare essentials of life. Driving down a road in a developed country indeed would be boring if you do have another activity to keep you busy. But your occupation with something other than driving at the time when you are required to concentrate on road and your steering could be fatal, we all know very well.
In the South extreme commuters take to roads, often and at the cost of their time as they are forced to spend quite a bit of time on road, shuttling back and forth between their homes and the work places.
Driving in India certainly is not for extreme commuters. Long-distance driving does not attract any road regulations. Traffic safety in India is unthinkable for what drives the vehicles is the convenience and not what is right and wrong. Load drivers are often seen resorting to drunken driving. And road rage is common too. Atleast it is not boring.
