A primary benefit of LASIK eye surgery is enjoying an active lifestyle free of cumbersome vision accessories. To ensure the success of your LASIK eye surgery, it is important to follow a regimen for reentering exercise and to protect your eye from trauma.

Following an Exercise Schedule
After your LASIK eye surgery, your ophthalmologist will inform you of all post-op care, including the level of exercise you can plan for in the coming months.

The following is a general guideline for exercising after LASIK:
• Immediately after – 2 days: Do not attempt any exercise. Take the time immediately after to rest and recuperate.
• 3 days: You may engage in exercise that does not run the risk of causing trauma to the eyes, including exercise on a treadmill, stepping machine such as a StairMaster, or a stationary bicycle.
• 1 week: jogging outdoors, rollerblading, golfing and weight lifting. Wear protective goggles if trauma to the eye is a risk.
• 1 month: contact sports, racquet sports (with eye protection), swimming, and dirt/mountain biking.
• 6 months: intensive outdoor activities such as scuba diving, kayaking, surfing and water skiing.

Avoiding Trauma to Your Eyes
Among possible LASIK complications is corneal flap displacement caused by trauma. When engaging in exercise and activities after LASIK eye surgery, it’s important to avoid trauma to your eyes. Something like a tennis ball or someone’s shoulder could strike your eye, causing the necessity of additional procedures. During the first month after eye surgery, wear protective goggles when engaging in any activities where there could be trauma to your eyes.

Examples of activities that could cause this trauma would be any contact sport (such as football), racquet sport (such as tennis), and even an activity like rollerblading that could cause you to trip or fall.

In addition to wearing protective eyewear, you should also wear a headband during these activities. A headband will prevent perspiration from dripping into your eyes. If sweat gets into your eyes after LASIK, it could carry with it bacteria and debris that could cause an infection. You want to avoid infections after LASIK as this will interfere with the healing process and the success of your eye surgery. Another reason to keep sweat out of your eyes is to avoid causing irritation, which could tempt you to rub your eyes. It is important to not rub your eyes after surgery as this could both cause infection and possibly displace the corneal flap.
