Lancaster, Pennsylvania has been in the news lately concerning the use of a giant vinyl tarp to cover a huge landfill. Known as the Frey Farm Landfill in Manor Township, it receives approximately one thousand tons of debris every day that cannot be burned or demolished. Simply covering with dirt was not working as it did not prevent gases from escaping into the atmosphere.

The idea of using a giant, retractable vinyl tarp to cover the area was presented. The main idea was to keep greenhouse gases from escaping into the atmosphere and causing global warming. This did not only work but, to their surprise, they learned that they might have a money making proposition on their hands.

Examination showed that enough methane gas was being produced to turn it into producing electricity. At the present time the state has a plan underway to build a trash-fueled power plant. This is expected to generate electricity for a five million dollar PPL mini-station.

Use of this giant vinyl tarp has permitted the land fill company to save money by not having to continually purchase soil to cover the landfill and has also all the employees to work on other projects. In addition, it has fulfilled the requirements for developing plans to reduce the emission of harmful gasses in a relatively inexpensive manner.

It is also exciting news that this landfill has been turned into an open-air classroom and is being used to train new scientific, engineering and technical employees everything there is to know about a landfill. Their training includes monitoring radiation equipment, recording types of waste being dumped, determining the effect of waste on the ground water and many other things.

Other landfill places throughout the country are keeping their eye on the Frey Farm Landfill and it is expected many others will follow their lead. It is an effective way to take care of the problem of land fills and can produce 'green' energy to reduce the need for fossil fuels. It is expected that many other uses for this tarp, which is made from recyclable materials, to be developed.
