Mothers devote a lot of time and energy nuturing their kids so they deserve to be appreciated.
In ancient Greece people worshipped Cybele the mother of the gods. The festival was held around the vernal equinox. In Rome the idea caught on and they honored mothers on the ides of March and on a day known as Matronalia dedicated to Juno when mothers received gifts.
In England Mothers day was celebrated from medieval times and maids and other household staff were given a day off to spend with their mothers. The people baked beautiful cakes and spent the day with their mothers.
In the US Julia Ward Howe wrote a Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870 as a call for disarmament and peace. This day was observed by mothers whose sons had fought and died in the civil war. In 1877 mother’s day as we know it today was first observed in Albion Michigan on the second Sunday of the month of May. And from then on mother’s day in the US is always observed on the second Sunday of May.
It is a day of thanksgiving and recognition of the contribution of mothers. So, celebrate mother’s day and let your mother know you care. Be innovative:
• Take her dancing.
• Gift her a trip to an exotic location.
• Do something she loves like going to a play or trek.
• If you are young make her a beautiful book of memories; paste pictures of you and her through the years and write nice captions.
• If you are creative write her a nice poem describing why you love her.
• If you paint or draw make a her a painting of a place she loves.
• If all you siblings live in different places plan to visit her together and surprise her.
• Take her for a sail on the high seas.
• Just walk down a shady lane with her holding her hand.
• Take a trip down memory lane and visit with her all the places you both enjoyed while growing up.
Make mother’s day exclusive and special. Don’t just buy a gift online or from a store. Think what will make her happy. Mothers devote a lot of time and energy nuturing their kids so they deserve to be appreciated.
Above all don’t forget to tell her you love her.
