Enterprise information management (EIM) is the name for the field that combines business intelligence (BI) and enterprise content management (ECM) based on the needs of information workers.

EIM takes these two approaches to managing information one step further, in that it approaches the information management discussion from an enterprise perspective. EIM approaches the management of information from the perspective of enterprise information strategy, based on the needs of information workers.

The Components of EIM
The goal is management of information, data and content to meet the needs of the business. The entire framework of EIM has to exist in a business environment. The unique intersection of the business environment and your organization will determine how business is accomplished. EIM in a small company or in a developing nation is not going to require the same makeup as EIM in a highly regulated and/or advanced corporation. Hard economic times will necessitate different component interaction than good economic times.

But in general, the key components a business-person must pay attention to for success are the Business model of the company, the information and its lifecycle, applications of the various technologies, organizational changes and its compliance, culture of the company and guidelines and policies for its governance. The EIM manages all enterprise content, including reports, forms, memos, catalogs, Web pages, databases and spreadsheets. Hence, there are many components to EIM that must interact with each other. EIM requires a commitment to doing things differently as far as data and content is concerned.

Approaches
The current market demonstrates two clear and distinct approaches to EIM. The first one is where a separate disclosure layer is put over the sub-solutions ECM and BI. The rise of Microsoft Sharepoint 2007 with the information worker paradigm has caused an acceleration of the acceptance of these kinds of solutions.

The other approach is found in large platform vendors that offer integrated solutions for both BI and ECM. The market shows signs of these platform vendors moving in this direction, but reality is that although vendors like IBM, Oracle Corporation, Microsoft, SAP AG and EMC are making progress, they still have a long way to go.
Gartner is one of the analyst firms paying specific attention to EIM and the progress vendors are making in this field.

An EIM Vision of Success
Regulatory drivers are well known as shapers of information and data policy, but many organizations still treat regulations as an afterthought. The benefit of EIM in terms of compliance comes from:
• Being compliant at a reasonable cost.
• Being flexible in the event that a regulator knocks on the door demanding full data lineage of your financial reports.
• Focusing on business affairs instead of regulatory matters.

Infosys and Microsoft Share Vision for Effective EIM
In 2006, Microsoft outlined a broad vision for enabling seamless access to people and information as well as upcoming solutions to help employees find, use and share information more quickly, easily and securely. To help make this vision become reality, Microsoft is depending on partners such as Infosys Technologies Limited, one of Microsoft’s global Systems Integration alliance partners.

Many organizations can start with EIM and have no incremental increase in spending. Therefore, all organizations can generate a huge ROI from EIM. Organizations with knowledge workers worldwide need accurate head counts and an understanding of employee’s expertise and competencies to properly match people, roles and tasks.
