The principle is that the more easily people can communicate with other workers, team members, customers, vendors, clients the less information will be distorted. Web 2.0 is the term for web-based tools and services that allow us to use and even improve with participation for e.g. user ratings in YouTube and Amazon. Lastly, the most important element, new business cultures, which is often overlooked. By definition, social applications rely on the people using them. Without changing the way corporations and their people behave, its impossible to free workers and information and achieve agility and increased productivity.

Social software for an enterprise must have the following functionality to work well:
Search: allowing users to search for other users or content
Links: grouping similar users or content together
Authoring: including blogs and wikis
Tags: allowing users to tag content
Extensions: recommendations of users; or content based on profile
Signals: allowing people to subscribe to users or content with RSS feeds

The most important barrier to the new tool is Culture, while the cost savings can be the other factor as you can measure ROI in the long run after implementing Enterprise 2.0.
Time to Invest
Despite the challenges and the global recession, survey respondents report that organizations will spend more on Enterprise 2.0 technologies in 2009 than they did in 2008. Companies are looking towards Enterprise 2.0 to give them a strategic advantage in a time when only the leanest and smartest companies will survive. In the forthcoming years, companies expected to replace older business application and hardware installations with large scale Enterprise 2.0 applications that will run in the cloud.
