An ENT doctor is one that specializes in ear, nose and throat problems.

For this article, we are going to focus on a few common problems of the nose, and how you and your doctor can address them.

Rhinitis
Rhinitis refers to the inflammation of the mucus membranes in the nose. This results to nasal congestion, which can be caused by some type of infection. Irritation to certain particles inhaled through the nose can also lead to rhinitis. ENT doctors can further classify rhinitis into different kinds. They can also provide you with information that would prevent rhinitis from affecting even your ears, eyes and throat.

Sinusitis
A common cold (which causes infectious rhinitis) can develop into sinusitis if not treated promptly. Sinus infection and swelling can also be brought about by fungi or bacteria trapped inside the sinuses. Or for some people, it is also possible that abnormal growths in the nose can cause obstruction and sinus infection. When both the nose and one or more of the sinuses are inflamed, this is known as rhinosinusitis. Since most cases involve inflammation of the nose and sinuses, rhinosinusitis has become the preferred term among ENT professionals. Rhinosinusitis may cause congestion, post-nasal drip, facial pain and pressure, headaches, bad breath, and fever.

Allergies
Allergies can be described as heightened sensitivity to particular elements in the environment, such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander, specific foods or medicines, etc. It is a disorder of the immune system, wherein your system reacts too violently to potential harmful substances. Having itchy nose and throat, difficulty in breathing, and the blockage of nasal passages are very much part of having allergies. There are times when even the eyes and skin are affected. Allergists can be consulted for special cases, but ENT or general practitioners usually have ample knowledge in dealing with allergies.

What To Do
Since the abovementioned nose problems have very similar symptoms, their corresponding cures are also similar. Usually, ENT doctors either target the removal of the causes of the problems, or they provide ways for you to cope with the symptoms. Organisms that are considered roots of infection can be eliminated as follows: antibiotics for bacteria, antihistamines for allergens, anti fungal medicine for fungi. Other causes, such as environmental dirt or the ingestion of particular food or medicine, can simply be avoided. Keeping your distance from infected individuals is another easy ‘remedy.’ As for coping with symptoms like nasal congestion, there are nasal sprays, nebulizers and oral medications that can clean up your sinus and nasal passages. Aside from targeting bacteria and such, these medications can temporarily reduce inflammation, provide moisture, and flush out excessive mucus that still lingers in your sinus areas. Saline rinse works the same way as the suggested medications above, especially if it is done on a regular basis.
