The concept of GHS was introduced by the United Nations so that all hazardous chemicals can be rationalized in a uniform manner across the globe. This method classifies and labels the hazardous chemicals based on the types of hazards they are associated with. Until GHS was introduced, each of the independent country had its own classification method for labeling hazardous chemicals. The symbologies that were used for defining the class and nature of the associated hazards (including explosion, fire and sometimes both aside from toxicity) were also unique. Now when such chemicals had to be transported to other countries, the symbologies were non decipherable for those countries. As a result, it was impossible to find out the ways to tackle a spillage or conflagration/explosion of such chemicals by others than those who have actually labeled them.
There lacked a common platform for defining the precautions that were required to be taken or the right way of tackling any accident or incident of spillage/conflagration/explosion of these chemicals. The GHS helped in establishing a commonality across the globe so that everyone involved in the handling of hazardous chemicals is capable of tackling any incident/accident that might occur while handling these chemicals. The goal of establishing such commonality is, in turn, to usher in a global improvement in safety and health standards, particularly for those involved in the handling of such hazardous chemicals.
With GHS, classification of the hazardous chemicals with the hazards they are associated with has become easier and possible now. It’s now possible to communicate the hazard criteria to all those personnel dealing with the hazardous chemicals, so that necessary protective measures can be taken. The system also helps in providing the personnel with a good understanding of ensuring safe handling of such chemicals. The labeling could be done as an SDS. Companies that deal in hazardous chemicals would require the GHS consultant’s help.
