The most popular material that is used for bed sheets is cotton. Egyptian or Pima are the most durable and comfortable varieties of cotton. The most important aspect when buying bed sheets is the thread count. Thread count indicates the quality of the sheet. A higher thread count indicating higher quality and a lower count indicating lower quality. The lowest desirable thread count to consider is 200 while 400 thread count sheets are delightfully smooth and soft. Bed sheets with higher thread count tend to get softer after every wash.
Cotton is best for summer because it is a light and very breathable fabric. For the winter months, flannel sheets are preferable as they are warm to touch. Thread count is not that important while choosing flannel sheets, but pilling is something you would need to look at. Pilling is the tendency of the sheets to form loose fluff balls which makes them feel uncomfortable against the skin. Other choices would be silk, satin, fleece and man-made fibers like microfiber and blended cotton.
Choose sheets in colors and patterns that enhance your bedroom décor. Besides sheets, bed skirts are décor accessories that are also highly functional. One advantage of having bed skirts is that it serves as a covering for the space underneath your bed and you could use it as invisible storage and protect the area under the bed from gathering dust.
Make sure that you match bed skirts to your beddings, as it looks decorative and pleases the eye. You can choose a plain, matching or contrasting color to go with your bedding. If you have floral or patterned bedding, a solid color derived from these elements would be ideal. The standard measurement is a 14-inch drop for most dust ruffles which ensures that it goes all the way to the floor. Some skirts have an oversized drop that forms a pool around the bed and adds to the elegance of the bedroom.
