1. Proper installation- The first line of defense in security and safety is proper installation of the door. To ensure that everything is correct, hire a professional to install it. If you are unsure about putting in an electric opener, he can do that as well.
2. Routine maintenance- There are certain things you should annually to make sure it is in good working order. Check the springs and chains for rust, lubricate the moving parts and clean out all the dust, dirt and cobwebs that might hinder operation.
3. Routine testing- Make sure it works properly once a month, particularly the open/close limit and the motion sensor.
4. Educate children- It is important to make sure children understand emergency garage door safety. They need to know it is not a toy and to steer clear of it when it is in operation.
5. Install emergency release- We take for granted that when we push the button that it will rise. What happens when the power is out? If it doesn’t come with one, make sure to install an emergency release kit so you can open it from the outside when the power is out. A pulley system unhooks the electric opener so you can do it manually.
6. Install motion sensors- Most, if not all, doors come with motion sensors. But, for them to work, they must be installed properly. Make sure the laser eyes match up on each side. When an object breaks the connection, it reverses back up. This could save a child’s or a pet’s life.
7. Wait for it to completely open and close- Never ever walk under it when it is still opening or closing. Grown-ups should set this example for children.
8. Install opener out of reach of children- The hardwired button for activating the opener is usually installed next to the door to the house. Be sure it is high enough that children can’t activate it intentionally or on accident.
9. Keep remotes out of reach of children- Portable remote controls in the car and on your keychain are recipes for disaster if you aren’t careful about keeping them out of the hands of kids.
10. Provide a proper example- As an adult, you should exhibit the same behavior you expect of your children when it comes to safety. To avoid an emergency, garage door safety must be practiced by everyone!
Following these tips can help you avoid an emergency. Garage door safety can mean the difference between life and death.
