Mentally see the major tasks to be accomplished for your next day in finished form. See no more than five items you want to accomplish. See it as if it’s so. This is to be done each day before you leave work.
2. Divide your day into quarters
Divide your day into four quarters with physical and mental breaks mid-morning, lunch and mid-afternoon. During these breaks do not think about the past. Clear your mind. Detach from results. Physically move if possible. Walk the office…go outside for some fresh air and a brisk walk. Ten minutes in the morning and afternoon with a minimum of 45 minutes for lunch should do the trick.
3. Reduce emails
The average executive of a Fortune 500 company has approximately 150 daily e-mails. Yikes! Break the ball and chain from your Blackberry ASAP. Make it a habit to check your e-mail only three times per day. If you use an e-mail program such as Outlook, close it and turn off any incoming e-mail notifications. A good rule of thumb is to check AND ANSWER e-mail at the start of your workday, after lunch and then one hour before you leave the office.
4. It's called voicemail for a reason
If you can, turn off the ringer on your phone and have all of your calls go to voicemail. It’s a S.C.O.R.E. Breaker when a person calls you during your "moment of truth".
5. Instant (Messaging) S.C.O.R.E. Breaker
If possible, avoid instant messaging in the office. There is no bigger S.C.O.R.E. Breaker than having an intrusive window pop up on your screen when you are trying to get or stay in the Zone.
6. No texting zone
Like instant messaging, text messages are a guaranteed way to lose the Zone. Turn the incoming messaging sound to silent and deal with any text messages when you are checking your e-mail (see Tip 1).
7. Do not disturb
If you have a door on your office, close it. This is a clear signal to any potential interrupters that you are trying to achieve a Zone state and should not be disturbed. If your company has an open door policy (which many do) immediately stand up when a person enters the room. This body language will tell the visitor to make their stay brief and to the point. If you don't have an enclosed office (i.e. a cubicle) see if management will let you strap on some head phones and play your favorite Zone music.
8. Hydrate
Concentration will lapse and the Zone will disappear if the brain is not given enough water (not coffee). Drink plenty of water throughout the day and you will experience more clarity and longer focus. Simple but effective.
