Ofcom’s survey found that a massive 29% of people living in Dundee own a 3G enabled mobile phone, the average figure for the rest of the United Kingdom is just 17%. Dundee City was also shown to have the highest number of people using their mobile phones to access the internet – with 34% of mobile users admitting to doing so.
Dundee’s figures may be boosted by the tech savvy students at the University of Abertay, which is in Dundee City. The University of Abertay is renowned for its computer courses and is one of the United Kingdom’s top investors in IT facilities, so it is unsurprising that the City appears to be full of mobile phone and technology users.
Despite the very high number of people in Dundee owning and using their 3G mobile phones, Scotland as a whole was actually found to be the lowest adopter of the 3G mobiles in the United Kingdom. Overall the take up of 3G mobile phones is just 14% in Scotland, while Wales has the highest figure with 20% of those living in Wales having 3G mobile phones.
Ofcom also discovered in their communication survey that 12% of households in the United Kingdom have actually done away with their normal landline at home and rely solely on their mobile phone for communication.
