DRIVING THE BPO

Sitting on the rear seat of the cab, my ears could no longer ignore the rampant conversation going between the Cab driver and the Guard accompanying him. The BPO Cab Drivers are known for their rash driving and for prohibiting the traffic rules. But did we know, what makes them squeeze through the highly loaded road and drive fast? Not their Mistake. They make a living with a meager amount of Rs. 5,000.00 or so and always carry a fear of being penalized for not meeting their deadlines. Reaching late to the office for any reason like flat tire, traffic jam, non co-operation by the employees results in a deduction of Rs. 500-800 from their monthly salary. We people are better off as our salary is not deducted for reaching late to the office!!!

To begin with I could not control the inquisitiveness foaming inside me to know more about the clandestine relationship that Cab drivers share with the life that has completely ignored them. Most of them have their official off on Sunday and have their feet on the clutch and the accelerator on the remaining working days. There is nobody to appreciate their indefatigable strength of workmanship and the 24 hour journey, they do everyday. They sleep in breaks, which they get between the drop of an employee and the pick up of another. The later the pick up time, more gain to the Cab driver.

Adding another finger in the hot oil is the impertinent conduct displayed by some of the employees. The driver had loads of stories to tell in this context . He asked me if I would be embarrassed by what he was about to say. My answer was “NO” as he did show the courtesy to take my permission. It was like a blow across an open wound, when a female employee refused to go with him at night as their was no guard. She was right, a guard is a must. The driver agreed to it but had to be part of the venom that was sprouted on him. She denounced him by letting him know that she was no fool to accompany him alone as he could take undue advantage of her and mislead her. What could a driver with a 4 year old daughter have said at that time?

We resumed the conversation to financial aspect of the job. The monthly salary may be low but they are smart enough to plough other modes of money making. They provide lift to the people in need of transport. When does this happen? At the time when the cab is scheduled for a pick up and is empty. They charge Rs. 30-45, depending on the KM. Good sense of business, I must say. At least, they are able to mine there living with an extra flab. At last, my destination arrived and I did not have to pay anything to the driver. I looked back and the driver was busy eyeing the roaster, for identifying the list of the employees to be picked up.
