Drilling rig is a highly specialized field. You have to have special oil filed equipment and specially trained employees for executing the same. There are two types of drilling rigs:
Water based and Land based Oil rigs are huge in size. Oil rigs require large mud pumps that circulate the slurry or drilling mud to send it down the drill pipe to the drill bit to keep the drill bit cool and this also removes the rock fragments as the well is drilled which is used to hoist the Drilling equipment.
Other oilfield equipment is used to extract the oil/natural gas later. Because of the remote locations of the rigs, a camp is required. All these arrangement can be considered to be the part of the drilling operation.
Off shore oil rig construction needs to have everything necessary for smooth operation and flawless execution. A platform that is fixed is built on steel or concrete legs that are anchored directly into the seabed. The oil deck is constructed to accommodate oil rigs, oil production facilities and crew accommodations. A compliant tower is also a fixed structure. Platforms that can be semi-submersible have legs with that are supported by a pontoon structure under the water.
The platform is easily movable as need be. They are anchored by cable anchors when not being moved.
The construction of an oil rig on shore is easier to make then one on the ocean. However, every oil rig has the elements to work with. With the varying complexity of building a rig, there are many hurdled. Some rigs are structured that do not move. The structures were built on site and were not removed when the well was drilled. Modern oil rigs are custom-built and are easily movable. Once the well is completed the rig will be moved to a new location. It can take weeks to move an oil rig as they have to be taken apart and moved. It takes time but is less wasteful and more cost effective than building derricks for every well.
Drilling rigs need to bore holes or tubes into the earth. The more elusive the oil is the more effort is put into harvesting it. Deeper oil wells are dug using specialized oilfield equipment. The deeper the hole the more specialized the equipment is.
