Don't let their resumes collect dust

This article explains the importance of developing followers, not just for the sake of capitalizing on their talents in their present jobs, but for long-term. When a leader puts effort and priority in the personal development of others, followers notice that the leader truly cares about them.

A nightmare for any leader is follower turnover. The cost to fill vacant positions can mean a lot of money for any organization, naturally if you are the leader you want to keep followers...smart leaders keep good followers.

Here's a few characteristics of a "good follower"

Dependable
Reliable
Honest
Hard working
Dedicated
Trustworthy

What if I told you these qualities don't exist if a follower isn't motivated...would you agree?

A follower who is motivated has hope and feels energized to give 110% to the organization. Motivation without challenge and recognition however doesn't exist.

So challenge your followers by giving the opportunity to learn through new experiences, new tasks, new projects, and new assignments. Recognize their efforts and then encourage them to add those accomplishments to their resumes.

While you don't want your followers to take a mass exodus through the door you do want them to know that you truly care about their career development. Followers who receive on-going personal development and career counseling will be top performers and stay motivated.

Yes, eventually some may leave the company or get promoted, but while you have them as your followers they will stay motivated...and they will not just be "good followers" but most likely they'll be the top performers. It truly is a win-win relationship for you and the follower.

Continual honing of their skills will energize them, give them greater opportunity for career growth, and provide them with talents that you can exploit to help meet the needs of your organization.
