About a week ago I was introduced into the world of dog food. To me dog food was dog food, except for maybe the price, dry or can. As it turns out dog food is a huge market! We have commercial dog food, homemade dog food, raw dog food ,organic dog food, natural dog food, and holistic dog food. The interesting thing about dog food is the market for homemade and organic dog food was very slim until the dog food recall of early 2007. This panic fueled the desire to look for alternative dog food options, which turned a slim market into a huge one. However, ifyou where to do some research on “recalled dog food” you will see the market is almost gone. The dog food companies have resolved the issue and once again commercial dog food is being bought again.

Yes many people are still concerned about other commercial dog foods, but have you ever looked at homemade dog food recipes or organic dog food?

After looking through a few dog food recipes, I found that making your own dog food or treats can be very time consuming. Organic dog food can cost about $50 for a 15 pound bag. Raw dog food, at five dollars a pound or more for meat, who can afford to feed their dog “people food”. If you where to take all three of the above options, you can see alternative dog foods’ can be expensive, time consuming, and how hard would it be, to make sure your dogs where getting the proper balanced diet. I then decided to perform a search on “good dog food”, to see what other options where there. My search results offered me nothing except long and boring articles trying to educate me on how to read commercial dog food labels. Why do we need to take a class on how to read a dog food label? Not to mention there are quite a few descriptive names for “road kill“. Another problem with commercial dog food is, you just don’t know how much of each substance is actually in the finished product. Anybody can take a hotdog and stuff a vitamin in it, but does that make it healthy?

With so many options it can be very difficult to decided which dog food is right for your pet. For most people it just boils down to time, money, and lifestyle. If you watch your diet and know everything you put into your body, then you would treat your dog food the same way. If you are an eat and run type of person, then you would probably feed your dog whatever your eating. If you are on a tight budget, then you might buy what’s on sale or the brand you have a coupon for. However, when it comes to your dogs’ diet, you should find some time and really look into good dog foods. Most people don’t give dog food much more thought, other than, should I buy dry, canned, or both? So before you purchase that new puppy, and before you run out to your local pet store and buy a buggy full of toys, please take the time and research good dog foods. I mean what’s all those fancy toys going to do for your dog if he/she isn’t healthy enough to play with them.
