Because of this, it is estimated that around 800,000 people are treated each year for dog bites. Almost 370,000 people will require treatment in an emergency room, which includes stitches, severed fingers or toes, or nerve damage. Some people are killed each year. Many of the victims of dog bites are children.
Dogs may be part of what we call “dangerous” or aggressive breeds, such as the notorious pit bull, but many dogs are taught to be aggressive or learn their behavior through rough treatment. Dogs, even nice dogs, can turn suddenly and viciously, maiming and killing people. They are naturally pack animals, and are more likely to be aggressive in groups.
The resulting injury from a dog bite, whether the dog meant to hurt or not, can be life-changing. People have lost noses, eyes, lips, or been seriously scarred on their face. This can make life physically difficult, as well as destroy their self confidence. People lose time recuperating or helping a loved one recuperate from the damage caused by a dog bite, which can affect their employment standing and their income. It can also hurt them economically when the medical bills come. However, the dog’s owner may be liable for any or all damages suffered.
Liability
If the dog has been running the street and attacks someone, the owner may be liable for not keeping the dog fenced or on a leash. If the owner lives in an apartment, the building owner or building manager may be found negligent. If someone else was in charge of caring for the dog at the time of the attack, such as a dog sitter or dog trainer, they may be negligent in their responsibilities.
