LASIK is a virtually painless procedure that has been safely preformed on millions of people throughout the United States. LASIK enjoys a staggering 92 percent rate of satisfaction among the people who have had it, making it one of the most highly satisfying elective procedures available today.
LASIK Procedure
LASIK is an extremely fast, outpatient procedure that is performed under local anesthetic. Due to the use of numbing eye drops, you should not experience any pain during your LASIK procedure, butsome mild pressure is common. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, you can talk to your doctor about sedatives that can be taken prior to your surgery to help eliminate your discomfort.
To preform LASIK, a small incision will need to be made in your cornea. This may be made with a laser, or with a surgical instrument that allows your ophthalmologist access to your stroma. Once access to your stroma is achieved, an incredibly precise laser is used to gently reshape your cornea. It is the reshaping of your cornea that will allow your eye to better reflect light, and free you from the burden of prescription eyewear.
Following your procedure you may experience minor postsurgical discomfort. Most often this comes in the form of dry eyes or the feeling of dirt or grit in the eye. These conditions are temporary, and can easily be dealt with through the use of prescription eye drops. Your LASIK surgeon will work closely with you during this time to help ensure your maximum comfort.
While LASIK itself is painless, there are some risks for complications. These include:
• Over or under correction
• Infection
• Halos and glare
Working closely with an experienced ophthalmologist who utilizes the latest LASIK technology will help reduce your risk for these complications. So too will carefully following all of your LASIK surgeon’s postoperative advice.
LASIK is a safe and effective procedure that has freed millions of people from cumbersome eyewear. Your ophthalmologist will best be able to help you determine if LASIK is right for you.
