Doctor Ratings - Finding a Physician Through The Web

Much like restaurants and hotels, it is now possible to find doctor ratings online, voted on and commented upon by patients who have the experience to say what’s on their mind.

However, while other consumer report type websites have been very popular and effective in separating the wheat from the chaff, you have to bring some of your own sensibilities when perusing these sites for good physicians. Having said that, there is a great deal of information available on your local medical care professionals if you take the time to look around.

There are several types of sites that offer doctor ratings, and many consumers will find aspects of each beneficial to them when they are searching for a primary physician or a specialist. First, there are the public sites that encourage anyone and everyone to post and rank their trip to the physician. These are the most popular types of sites and the most common. Then there are several private sites that have more information but charge a premium for the customer to access it. While these sites can have valuable information, most of that information can be garnered for free from other sources. Finally, there are sites set up by insurance companies that rank their network physicians according to a host of categories. Some insurance companies have even begun to offer patient discounts for choosing a physician with a higher ranking.

Of course, you may not be looking for doctor ratings at all. Many people who search for physician information online are simply looking for contact information and hours of the office, which can usually be best acquired at the physician’s official website. Make sure the information is current by giving the office a call, even if it is a walk-in clinic. Perhaps you are looking for a physician’s credentials, such as whether or not they are board certified or what kind of degree they have, and from what institution. Some of this information is available through public websites, but, again, you may have more luck going straight to the horse’s mouth.

If you are looking for doctor ratings, you should be cautious when putting weight to the information you find online. Take a note of how popular the website is and how many comments there are on the physician you are thinking of researching. Three or four comments, even if they are heavily biased in one direction or another is not really a solid base from which to form an opinion. Keep in mind that it’s human nature to be quicker to go online with a complaint than with a compliment. Nonetheless, if a physician has many rankings and comments, then you can feel more secure in accepting that information and use it as a guide for how to proceed.
