Nowadays, people are spoilt for choice. It can certainly baffle your senses when it comes to selecting the one that meets your requirement for a particular health condition. There are numerous brands luring the consumers with fancy names, phytonutrient combination, dosages and ofcourse pricing. Hence, when it comes to selection, you are left with no clear or apparent options. Selecting the right supplement is not as easy as you think it may be. Before reaching out to the new supplements, map your needs, get the facts clear and evaluate the benefits and safety. Here are some tips to help you evaluate and select the right one that your body may specifically need.
- What does my body need? You must learn to recognize the symptoms and signals your body gives you and take notice of it. Know for sure the exact nature of your condition and whether a supplement is the best choice for you.
- Is this supplement right for you and will it work? Read the ingredient listing and carry out your own little research on those ingredients. Do not go on hearsay. There are several reports about efficacy of branded supplements published by independent research organizations. For example, an ingredient like glucosamine has been demonstrated for success and failure in addressing joint pain. Some report it works and others feel it isn’t the right ingredient for maintaining good joint health. Again, do heed your practitioner’s advice to select the right supplement?
- Is the supplement clinically proven as a whole or includes only tested ingredients? Don’t be tempted to purchase supplements based on celebrity endorsement or an appealing testimonial on the promotional site. They don’t prove anything. Ingredients are demonstrated to work, but one cannot just assume that the combination of these ingredients will also work. Play safe. Look for a complete clinically proven formula and not just clinically tested ingredients.
- What types of ingredients are used? Are they natural or synthetic? There is an increasing number of incidents of supplements being illegally spiked with synthetic analogs to make them more effective but pose serious safety concerns. A brand that claims to have unusually higher “purity” of actives may not be all natural. Moreover, it is never a good idea to purify a herb to the point of excluding other actives naturally found in that herb.
- Will the new supplement cause any interaction with existing medication or food that I take?
If you are currently on a set of prescribed medication and would like to take a supplement, do share the same with your healthcare provider. Your doctor can judge the compliance of the supplement with your current list of medications and can suggest changes if required. Some natural ingredients used in supplements may cause serious interactions with other supplements, prescription or OTC drugs. On the other hand it is perfectly safe to take supplements concurrently with some medications.
- Any specific instructions for supplement intake? Carefully follow the instructions for dosage and use. If it is recommended to be consumed in a particular manner, please follow so.
- How safe is the supplement? All natural does not mean all safe. Advertiser’s terms like “All natural”, “Totally safe” etc. can be misleading. Prefer a clinically proven formula for not just efficacy but also for safety. Discuss your medication with your healthcare provider for your doubts.
- Do they follow and meet with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance? Do select a supplement that is made in a pharmaceutical grade, FDA approved facility. These facilities adhere to higher quality control from the raw material stage to the finished product. It also assures that the supplement is free from dangerous substances like heavy metals, pesticides and pathogens.
- Can I get the same benefit with a change in lifestyle? The word ‘supplement’ means something added to boost overall health and assistance to improve health for specific conditions. If you achieve the same results by starting exercise or choosing a healthy diet, then maybe you should reconsider taking a supplement.
Right selection of supplements can help you maintain good health; improve your quality of life. Be smart in selecting the right supplement.
