Differences between the rotary engine and cylinder engine

These are the rotary engine and the cylinder engine. These two types of engines can be distinguished by the way they both function.

The Rotary engine is an internal combustion engine but unlike your ordinary cylinder engine it has a stationary crankshaft as the entire cylinder block rotates. Its main application was in aviation though in some cases it is also used in motorbikes and

A cylinder engine on the other hand looks similar to a rotary engine but the key difference is that they use a conventional rotating crankshaft in a fixed engine block. Its what most vehicles ride on.

These two engines have several key differences that can be used to distinguish between the two of them.

One of the major differences is that while a cylinder engine has all the four functions namely: intake, compression, combustion and exhaust in one compartment which is the cylinder, the rotary engine has all the four functions taking place in different compartments

Another major difference is that a rotary engine has fewer moving parts compared to its counterpart. For example, a two-rotor rotary engine has three moving parts. These are the two rotors and the output shaft. Even the simplest of cylinder engines which is the four cylinder engine has forty moving parts which include pistons, connecting rods, camshaft valves, valve springs, rockers, timing belts, timing gears and the crankshaft.

The rotary engine also has all the parts moving in harmony in one direction unlike the haphazard movement that the cylinder engine is accustomed to. The rotary engine counterbalances this movement in one direction by use of spinning counterweights which are designed to cancel any vibrations and thus ensure the engine runs smoothly. This also translates to a smoother power delivery as compared to the cylinder engine.

Engines operate on the concept of displacement and these two engines differ when it comes to this. Displacement is basically the swept volume of fuel by each cylinder and we are basically talking about the fuel that moves through the cylinders. This is directly proportional to the power output of the engine depending on the efficiency. Seeing as the two engines are designed differently as far as the pistons are concerned it stands out as one of the major differences because they both would give a different output with the same fuel capacity.

The differences in mechanics also translates into differences as far as the efficiency equivalence is concerned. This can be split into volumetric and thermodynamic efficiencies. When it comes to combustion, the ideal combustion chamber should be spherical and this makes the cylinder engines more ideal than the rotary engines. They also have more parts moving and this gives them an edge over the rotary engines when it comes to thermodynamic efficiency because they tend to turn a bit more fuel into useable power. In terms of volume, the rotary engine has an advantage over the cylinder engine. They have no valves in between like their cylinder counterparts and thus tend to have an easier time filling their chambers this realize more capacity faster.

It is these differences that make the two types of engines better suited for their different purposes.
