Diamond is one of the best known and well demanded Gemstone variety. Since diamonds are glittering, it is been used for making various ornaments and decorative items. We can trace some earliest references of Diamonds in our ancient times.

Diamonds’ hard and tough nature makes them an Industrial material and a fluorescent gemstone. Diamonds are one among the highly traded commodities that multiple organizations have been created for grading and certifying them based on the four Cs, which are carat, cut, color, and clarity. Apart from these, Diamond’s other qualities such as shape, color and the fluorescence plays a major role in designing jewels.

The high value of Diamonds has also been the driving force behind dictators and revolutionary entities, especially in Africa, using slave and child labor to mine blood diamonds to fund conflicts.
Today Diamonds are popularly used as gemstones for adornment which virtually dates back into antiquity. The significant characteristic of Diamond gem stones is the dispersion of white light into various spectral colors. Gemologists have developed various grading methods in twentieth century which strongly increases the usage of Diamonds as the Gemstones. The commonly used basic descriptors of Diamonds are carat, cut, color, and clarity.

The measure of carat weight refers the mass of a diamond. One carat is referred as 200 milligrams. The point unit—equal to one-hundredth of a carat (0.01 carat, or 2 mg)—is commonly used for diamonds of less than one carat. Diamond cutting is the art and science of creating a gem-quality diamond out of mined raw stones. The cut of a diamond generally describes the manner in which a diamond has been shaped and polished from its beginning form as a rough stone to its final gem proportions. The finest quality according to color grading is totally colorless which is graded as "D" color diamond across the globe which means it is absolutely free from any color. Clarity is a measure of internal defects of a diamond termed as inclusions. Inclusions are usually crystals of a foreign material or another diamond crystal, or structural imperfections such as tiny cracks that can appear whitish or cloudy.

Gem diamonds are commonly traded on the wholesale market based on single values for each of the four Cs; for example knowing that a diamond is rated as 1.5 carats (300 mg), VS2 clarity, F color, excellent cut round brilliant, is enough to reasonably establish an expected price range. The actual market value of the individual stones depends on the detailed information of the basic descriptors. Consumers are advised to pick their favorite gemstones based on these descriptors.

Diamonds never show all of their beauty as rough stones; instead, they must be cut and polished to exhibit the characteristic fire and brilliance that diamond gemstones are known for. Diamonds are generally cut into a variety of shapes that are designed to accentuate these features. The appearance of the gem stones can be affected by various other characteristics such as Fluorescence, the source of the kimberlite, the gemological institute in which it is been created. In addition, Diamonds’ beauty is certainly dependent on the cleanliness.

A number of for-profit gemological grading laboratories have been established within the last two decades, many of them also based in Antwerp or New York. Yet these entities serve to provide similar services as the non-profit associations, but in a less expensive and timelier fashion. They produce certificates that are very similar to those of the GIA.
