First, know that the setting should be suitable to her hands. For instance, for a thick finger, a delicate setting may be too fine. Or, a bulky one is likely to dominate the thin hand. Similarly, her life style of hard working woman or a relaxed one should also be the consideration.
For diamond engagement rings, there are plenty of settings available to the couples. Most of these aim at protecting the precious stone. While this is the prime concern, you should choose to set the diamond in such a way that maximum light enters it for creating the brilliance and fire. Keeping this in mind, you can choose from prong, bezel, channel, pave, tension and many more.
Prong setting is especially picked up for solitaires as the diamond is allowed to dominate the appearance of the ring. Four to six prongs claw the stone tightly in the middle. Its advantage is that maximum light is allowed to enter the stone for sparkle. But choose this setting only for larger diamonds. The smaller ones may be lost into the prongs.
If you need to make a smaller diamond look larger then bezel setting could be the choice. A collar of metal is wrapped around the stone at its lower side for security. This facilitates maximum light to enter the stone too for brilliance. But it is also an expensive setting than prong.
Many couples want many stones on the surface of the diamond engagement rings, avoiding a single stone on the top. They can opt for channel settings for fixing of the stones on the surface of the ring in a channel that can go half the way of the ring. However, the gems may become a little subdued into the channel and usually round shaped stones are allowed for fixing on the ring.
Pave settings is popular with the couples as this uses the entire surface of the rings for fixing of the gems on it. This gives a dazzle to the ring. The numbers of stones are secured with thin prongs.
The jewelers also use the very metal of the diamond engagement rings when you ask them to opt for tension settings. The strong metal band is used to hold the stone into small grooves at the edge of the ring band. But these are expensive settings as lots of skill and work is required on the strong metal.
If you do not choose a bezel setting because the metal folds over the stone, then pick up flush setting. Besides, no domination of the metal, this setting is known for good security of the precious stone that is tightly fixed in a whole on the ring surface and the rim of the ring pressed around the stone.
There are many more settings available to the modern day couple. But whichever setting they may choose for diamond engagement rings, make sure that security and aesthetic aspect of the rings are met.
