Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy
Symptoms of cerebral palsy can develop as early as the first few months of life but by the sixth month, it should become quite apparent that the child is having difficulty.
Symptoms include:
• Low or poor muscle tone
• Abnormal reflexes
• Poor feeding abilities
• Irritability
• Abnormally high-pitched cries
• Lethargy
• Abnormal posture
• Seizures
• Body twitching
• Slow development
• Problems with motor skills

There are many ways a doctor can diagnosis cerebral palsy in a child. However, a diagnosis may not happen quickly because the doctor may want to give the child’s body time to recover from an injury on its own. An infant’s brain has a greater ability to repair damage or unaffected areas could take over the damage areas.
In trying to diagnose a child with cerebral palsy, the physician will test the child’s motor skills, body movements, reflexes, posture and medical records to help indicate the cause for difficulty. Various tests and procedures include:
• Reflex test
• Vision test
• Intelligence test
• Hand preference test
• CT, or computer tomography, scan
• MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, scan
• EEG, or electroencephalogram, scan

Another vital step in diagnosing a patient is ruling out other medical conditions or disorders. With the help of medical testing, the doctor can determine if the child’s symptoms are related to cerebral palsy or not. It is also important for the doctor to make sure that the child’s condition is not getting worse over time. While some symptoms may change, cerebral palsy is not a progressive disorder.
