Diabetics have struggled in recent years, finding medication to regulate their insulin levels. Two of the most prominent of these drugs are Avandia and Actos. Actos may be sold under the generic form of Pioglitazone and Avandia under Rosiglitazone. These drugs may also be combined and sold in various combinations and variations including Avandamet, Avandaryl, Actos plus Met, Actos plus Met XR, duet Act.

In November 2007, Avandia was required to carry the FDA’s highest level warning on its container. Ongoing studies and trials have shown an association between the use of Avandia and heart failure and heart-related risks. While it still remained on the market, many diabetics were increasingly concerned about exposure to the drug. In September 2010, the Food and Drug Administration made the decision to significantly restrict the use of diabetes drugs. They only allowed Type 2 diabetics to use it who are unable to control their diabetes on other medication. Strict controls were implemented to restrict access to the medication. Diabetics on medication containing any Rosiglitazone (Avandia) medication were advised to discuss these risks with their doctors.

These risks are not unique to Avandia however. A black box warning was placed on Actos in 2007 for causing or exacerbating heart failure. This again put patients in a difficult spot, making them choose between the medicine and its risks, or the consequences of not taking the medication. As the warnings on Avandia became more restrictive, Actos usage in diabetics steadily increased. The use of Actos is much more common now than ever before.

In 2010, users of Actos had another side effect to be concerned about. The FDA announced it was reviewing data concerning long term Actos use and an increased risk for developing bladder cancer. Some studies showed as much as a 40% increased risk of bladder cancer among Actos users who had been on the medication for a year or more. Studies in European Countries found similar results, prompting regulators in Germany and France to order doctors to stop prescribing Actos.

Users of Actos now have to now consider all the risks of taking Actos, including the increased risk of bladder cancer. All decisions should be made in consultation with a healthcare professional. Lawsuits are now being filed on behalf of Actos users who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer. It is important that victims of Actos protect their legal rights and consult with an attorney.
