Dermal fillers like Botox now have a competitor in the world of miracle drugs and it is called Dysport, which is another name for its full scientific name which is Abobotulinum Toxin A. The full scientific name for Botox is Botulinum Toxin A. While Botox has become such a widely used substance that it has become a household word, Dysport is relatively new on the market.

Dysport has only recently gained approval by the FDA in May 2009. FDA stands for the Food and Drug Administration which is the United States' agency which oversees the safety of its citizens' pharmaceuticals, foods, beverages and medical devices.

To receive the stamp of this agency's approval, items undergo strenuous testing in order to ensure that the population's health is protected. Although this substance is new to American markets, it has been used successfully in many other countries around the globe.

Both substances work in the same way, relaxing muscles in order to reduce wrinkling. The new drug's protein molecule is smaller, however, so tends to work more quickly. Botox usually takes effect within five to seven days but Dysport only takes from one to two days to become noticeable. The price tag for the newer substance is reportedly lower, as well. It also has been seen to spread more easily in the body, so fewer injections are needed.

There is some debate about which of these will last longer. Physicians in Europe have reported that Dysport lasts longer. American physicians want to wait until there has been more evidence in the United States before making that claim so the jury is still out on which will last longer. Both substances should last from three to four months, at least.

Botox has been on the market for nearly three decades. It has been used to treat an array of issues including easing wrinkles, eliminating migraine headaches, clearing up adult acne, stopping excessive armpit sweating and in treating neurological disorders, spastic conditions and facial tics. It has even been used to relax muscles in the back and chest area in order to give women non-surgical breast lifts. There is some comfort in the tried and true but are Americans ready to try something new?

Will its new competitor on the market be able to do all of these same heroic feats and at a lesser cost? Will one outrun the other or will it simply be a matter of personal preference among plastic surgeons and their patients? Time will tell and the clock on this competition has just begun to tick.
